How to Safely Jump Start a Car

Jump starting a car is a key skill to have. To begin, park a car with a good battery nose-to-nose with the car that won't start. Put the cars in park and set the cars' parking brakes.

Connect a positive battery cable to both positive car battery terminals. Connect a negative battery cable to the good car's negative terminal and the bad car's engine. Start the engine of the good car. Rev it a few times, and let it run for about two minutes. Start the engine of the car with the bad battery, and let it run a while.

Stop in to our service center at Valley Volkswagen in Staunton, VA for help with a jump start. We can get you set up with cables if you don't have them. Our technicians can also check your battery and alternator.
